From heritage silk wraps to cake smash sets — the baby photoshoot concepts our Madurai studio is booked out for this year, plus what actually works at each age.
A baby photoshoot fails or succeeds long before the shutter fires. It comes down to three things: choosing a concept that suits the baby's age, timing the session around sleep and feeds, and keeping the styling simple enough that your child remains the subject.
Below are the ideas we shoot most often at our Koodal Nagar studio, organised by age so you can pick something your baby can actually do.
Newborn: day 6 to day 14
1. Ivory wrap portraits
The purest newborn image there is. A single neutral wrap, one light source, and the baby curled exactly as they were in the womb. This is the frame parents end up printing large.
2. Parent hands cradle
Your hands, your baby, nothing else in frame. It ages beautifully because there is no styling to date it.
3. Heritage silk
A Kanjivaram border laid as a backdrop with a tiny brass lamp beside. Deeply Tamil, and grandparents love it.
4. The nest
Fresh florals and moss built into a shallow bowl. Styled fresh each session — never reused greenery.
5. Sibling introduction
Big sibling seated, supported, baby placed in their lap with a spotter's hands just out of frame. The honest expressions here are unbeatable.
3 to 6 months: the sitter stage
6. Tummy-time close-ups
Once head control arrives, the tummy-time lift gives you those wide-eyed, chin-up portraits.
7. Bath bubbles
A wooden tub, warm water, controlled bubbles. Endlessly joyful and surprisingly easy to shoot.
8. Colour block
One saturated backdrop, one matching outfit. Graphic, modern, and it prints beautifully as a triptych.
9. Fabric swing
A sturdy, low-hung fabric hammock — always supported, never suspended for real. Softness and motion in one frame.
6 to 12 months: personality arrives
10. Cake smash
The most requested first-birthday concept in Madurai, and for good reason. Build the palette around the invite, keep the cake eggless and simple, and shoot from low.
11. Fruit and flowers
Watermelon, mango, marigold. Messy, colourful, and toddlers actually engage with it.
12. Dad's shirt
Baby swimming in an oversized formal shirt. Comic, tender, and it costs nothing to style.
13. Book nook
A pile of board books and a warm lamp. Quiet, and lovely for a child who is not in the mood to perform.
Toddler and milestone
14. First steps sequence
Shot as a burst and delivered as a panel of four. Movement tells a story a single frame cannot.
15. Occupation dress-up
Doctor, pilot, chef. Simple props, huge personality.
16. Outdoor golden hour
Anaiyur's open fields at 5:30 PM give you backlit hair and a soft, natural palette.
17. Annual milestone series
Same chair, same backdrop, once a year. Ten years later it is the most valuable thing you own.
Practical tips that make the difference
- Book the morning. Babies are at their best between 9:30 and 11:30 AM.
- Feed just before. A full baby is a sleepy, cooperative baby.
- Pack two extra outfits. Accidents are guaranteed; panic is optional.
- Keep adults in neutrals. Bright prints on parents pull attention away from the child.
- Do not schedule around vaccinations. Leave 48 hours either side.
If you are planning a session in Madurai, our Little Luxe newborn studio is set up for all of the above — heated, sanitised and stocked with every prop mentioned here.
